Neck Pain

What is it?

Neck pain, is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints. It can affect individuals of any age and is typically associated with long hours in front of a computer, sustained postures, stress, muscle overload, or biomechanical dysfunctions.

However, neck pain does not always originate from an exclusively physical source. In many cases, it is also influenced by emotional tension and the way the nervous system responds to stress.

Most Common Symptoms

Pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulders.

  • A constant sensation of tension or "heaviness" in the cervical area.

  • Limited range of motion when turning or tilting the head.

  • Headaches, particularly tension-type headaches.

  • Discomfort radiating into the trapezius muscles or the scapular region.

  • Recurrent muscle spasms.

  • Muscle fatigue when maintaining prolonged postures.

  • Dizziness or a sensation of instability in some cases.

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort or pain.

Why does it occur?

The neck is designed to be both mobile and stable. When it remains under tension or in sustained postures for extended periods, certain tissues can become overloaded and generate pain.

The most common contributing factors include:

  • Prolonged screen-use postures.

  • Physical and emotional stress.

  • Lack of mobility in the thoracic spine.

  • Weakness of the deep cervical flexor muscles.

  • Overload of the trapezius and superficial musculature.

  • Bruxism or jaw tension.

  • Nervous system dysregulation.

The Importance of Stress and the Nervous System

The neck is one of the primary regions where the body tends to manifest emotional stress. Anxiety, chronic worry, or mental overload can keep the nervous system in a state of hyperarousal, promoting continuous muscle contraction in the neck, shoulders, and jaw.

Over time, this tension can become an established pattern, causing pain to persist even in the absence of significant tissue damage.

Therapeutic Approach

Treatment is tailored to the individual needs of each patient and may combine various techniques to relieve pain, restore mobility, and prevent recurrences:

  • Manual therapy.

  • Myofascial release.

  • Dry needling.

  • Therapeutic exercise.

  • Cervical and thoracic mobility work.

  • Postural re-education.

  • Breathing techniques and nervous system regulation.

Treatment Objectives

Reduce pain and stiffness.

  • Restore cervical range of motion.

  • Improve posture and movement control.

  • Reduce muscle tension and the impact of stress.

  • Promote a comfortable and safe return to daily activities.

  • Decrease the risk of recurrence.
